Yeah I read that too, but no explanation found so far. In Japan funeral flowers also come in odd numbers.

So an ikebana arrangement always has an odd number of the same flower. Japanese dinnerware traditionally comes in sets of 5 (you can get less these days) rather than the 6 that’s common in the west. pic.twitter.com/iz0ZIASGas

Another aside: the page linked to above says the numbers 4 and 9 are considered unlucky in Japan. 4 still is, 9 not so much (you’ll see 9th floors in buildings but not so much 4th floors). However the unluckiness of 13 has been imported somewhat now.

Incidentally, there was a native wago or Yamatokotoba way to count numbers, but it didn’t count above the hundreds. I guess there was little need back then for higher numbers.

(The Chinese numbering system is almost the same as Japanese with some minor variations, since Japan imported it from China a long time ago)

...I often forget. Which is why I wrote that Japan has a pop. Of 1.27 billion when it’s 127 million, or 1.27 oku. In other words, when codeswitching from E-J or other European languages you need to switch the numbering systems too.

I absolutely love this dance version of Ue o Muite Arukou. It’s full of hope and positivity, but also anger. We need anger as much as the other emotions. And it features the Pear Funassyi too. Perfect. twitter.com/amonmiyamoto/s…

Lawson is buying the produce from a “Michi no eki”, a roadside combination local farmer’s market/restaurant/entertainment kind of facility. Michi no eki are really suffering because of #StayHome and few/no tourists.
