Also, the Black Death, i.e. the great plague of the 14th century, was not just in Europe. It decimated the Mamluk Sultanate to give just one example. (And it was not the only occurence of the bubonic plague ever either.)

The term Dark Ages doesn't mean it was backwards or filthy or otherwise horrible; it just means there are a lack of existing records about it due to various factors. (And the term is not used by historians anymore anyway.)

By more 'modern' criteria the European Middle Ages were not that 'backwards' at all, and the Renaissance was not that 'advanced' either.

Besides, we should stop regarding the criteria that 19th/20th western nations defined 'civilized' are set in stone. We're already doing that w/r/t the environment, religion, sexual/gender preferences. Let's go further with that.
